Anything for Better Representation: Three new bodies added to LUC’s Organisational Structure

LUC is young. Therefore when students bring up the issue of little student representation, it has usually been waved off. Similarly the complicated structure of its decision making and advisory boards has brought critique, but little has been done. Thankfully LUC’s years of being plagued by obscure boards and inefficient inter-organ communications is over, as the Dean recently announced the opening of three new bodies.

These bodies, the Management Board, the Decision Board and the Maximum Advisory Panel at first may seem conflictive. They seem to only add more complexity to something that already looks really confusing. But impressions are different:

“The scheme may seem complicated but it really isn’t. The new bodies just make the thing easier on the eyes.” claimed a second year, who had never seen the scheme before.

In fact, according to the official announcement of the change, “—the addition of the new boards makes an already transparent process even clearer; with three new boards to meet once a block and send each other emails there will be no opinion missing once the College Board decides.”

The most promising new board is without a doubt the Maximum Advisory Board. It does not have any power, but that doesn’t affect the huge advising potential the body has. Collecting together all the managing bodies already there, the Maximum Advisory Board is going to advise on the highest levels of the College to everything from the Programme Board to the College Board.

Two new positions have opened thanks to the new boards. The Advisory Director and the General Advisor both serve to compile advice and bring it all straight to the College Board and the new Management Board. When asked to comment the Advisory Director said “—the changes appear to be good, but I can’t comment definitively.” Meanwhile the General Advisor claimed that “I would probably add a few more bodies, but I can’t decide anything.“ Here’s to hoping the LUC’s structure keeps getting more transparent!
