There is Hope! First year full of up and coming “World-Saviours”

Walking through the study area on floor 2 of AvB has certainly changed throughout the years. Where once you would see groups of vagrants drifting in and out of sleep, today you only observe clusters of fresh faces who are actively discussing (and solving!) issues such as poverty, the refugee crisis and global warming.

In an exclusive interview with a first year student we learned that LUC has become home to a new generation of “World-Saviours,” a term coined by the student in situ. The issues these students are tackling are big issues, but — we quote — “They are by no means too big for us.”

As our investigations continue we are beginning to see that most of these issues have stupidly simple solutions. “Need a solution for famine? Buy a butt-load of Ramen; it’s only like 30 euro-cents a package.”

Such advances don’t go unnoticed both for the good and the bad. While teachers are lauding the first year initiative, second and third years look on with noticeable disdain. When asked what he thought of the first year’s successes, a disgruntled third year replied with a shrug “You can’t change jack-sh*t in your first year. A 100 word essay won’t help the world. That’s why I’ve already started writing my capstone.”

Despite these claims it is exciting to see a university located in the International City of Peace and Justice so willing to tackle Global Challenges.
