New research into the relationship between chosen majors and online behavior has yielded fascinating results. In a study to be published by the end of the year, researchers from Leiden University have discovered a relationship between major choice and a proclivity to post spam on Facebook.
The study discovered that Human Diversity majors consistently posted more spam than their closest competitor, Sustainability. The nature of the spam was not discussed in the paper, but one of the lead researchers described it as: “Mostly trivial posts, speculative drivel, occasionally some full blown fiction dressed as fact alongside the sporadic poll or petition.”
A particular group of post types was of interest for the research team, namely “—those posts where you think it’s a video and you click it but it’s actually a picture and it shares it to your wall.” The researchers determined that the spike in spam may be a result of the Human Diversity majors clicking on these posts, but their research has still not been finished.
While LUC News is not completely sure of the future implications this study has, the conclusions to the paper warned prospective Human Diversity students about the potential tendency. They also propose further research into specific areas of interest, especially online petitions.
