Widespread hunger broke out among LUC students yesterday, as Dagelijks Lekker, the closest sandwich shop, closed its doors for 24 hours.

Dagelijks Lekker, which is also lovingly known as the “€1,80 store,” is frequented by students of all years. Ever since opening in late 2014 the shop has exploded in popularity due to its cheap prices and proximity to AvB. No one could have predicted how decimating the impact of its closing could be.

Initially there was disbelief as a small group of students lined up in front of the shuttered doors. By lunch time a crowd of LUC students and Ministry of Foreign Affairs employees queued outside the shop doors in the hope of obtaining cheap lunch. It all turned out to be pointless as eventually at 13:30 an LUC student checked the opening hours and announced that the shop would not open.

LUC News was at the scene and compiled some reactions:

“I go there every day, Albert Heijn sandwiches just aren’t the same!” - exclaimed a Third Year

“The chicken/cajun sandwich is my favourite, I miss it already!” – claimed a Ministry of Foreign Affairs employee who quickly got into an argument with a colleague who thought the pesto/mozarella sandwich was superior.

“I don’t have the time or the willingness to go anywhere else, so I eat this everyday.” - muttered a confused Third Year

Many students eventually disgruntledly settled on food from the station. We observed lines at the Smullers, Burger King and the Doner Company, while other less popular places, like that German sausage shop, still remained clientless. There were also others who reported they were not going to eat anywhere else than Dagelijks Lekker.

Dagelijks Lekker refused to make a statement when contacted by LUC News.
