One of the most striking features of the innovative Anna van Buerenplein building is its unicolor interior; white everywhere. Ceilings, stairs, columns, tables, chairs; even the bed linen.

While some complain about how visible their trash leakage is on the white floor, others dedicate their time to trying to understand the story behind the white interior.

“I think it’s because white is a pure color; it is meant to make us feel as equals, honest in front of the academy and each other.” told us a Human Diversity major in the middle of his meditation.

“It’s actually because they wanted to save on electricity. With light bouncing off the walls until the last gasp of twilight you can keep the lights off longer.” claimed a particularly inspired Sustainability major with a beer in his hand.

“It is because white brings about mental clarity. Being surrounded by white should, technically be the least distracting environment to be in, and therefore the best one for studying.” exclaimed a first year who really thought he had it down.

Here at LUC News we were highly skeptical of each of these answers, and we are happy to announce that they were all wrong.

LUC News recently sat down with Wiel Arets, the architect who designed Anna van Buerenplein, in an effort to answer the distressing question.

Wiel Arets, the mastermind behind the building, got straight to the point.

After hearing our question his body shook with a cackle. That's when he revealed the shocking truth:

“AvB is white for a simple reason. I was shopping in Albert Heijn, when I noticed the shelf with things that were in Bonus that week. I saw that White paint was in Bonus and that's when I made the connection. We ordered 750 pints that same evening.”

Regrettably, Arets was unable to explain why the bed linens are white as well.

So there you have it. AvB is white because of those same Bonuses we all love. Here at LUC News we are just happy that Arets did not design AvB around Kingsday.
