In Memoriam: LUC Fruit

LUC News is sad to present its newest segment: In Memoriam. Not meant to represent things that are physically dead (though some may be), this segment is meant to celebrate pieces of LUC culture that have left LUC, been forgotten, been discontinued, or lost throughout the years.

This week we dedicate a moment to the memory of LUC Fruit which exploded in popularity in 2015. Among so many LUC Facebook pages, LUC Fruit was not one of the bad apples. In its short but exhilarating few months, every week a different fruit toured LUC, educating everyone about nutrition, health, trust, loyalty, and the powers of fruit. LUC students went bananas for the page.

For many LUCers it was a learning experience as the page doled out facts and tips: "Eat oranges instead of mandarins, they've got more vitamin C!" For others it was an emotional trip; from finding out that Michael Mendonca had "―never eaten papaya before in my life. It’s a great honour to hold this beautiful fruit for the first time," to wiping away a tear when we found out that the papaya was no longer among us.

Sadly, the last message ever from LUC Fruit was that: “Starting from Monday, we will return with our weekly fruits and daily segments. The people are ready. The fruits are juicy and tender. Let’s do it.”

Who knew a game of “Where is the Papaya?” could unite a whole building of sexually active students? What better place to raise awareness for LUC’s gingers? Here is to the memory of LUC Fruit, may it never die or disappear, but live on as a part of LUC’s cultural pantheon.
