In Memoriam: The window that fell out of AvB

Anyone looking at AvB can immediately see how central its windows are to its design. And let’s be honest, that glass wall in our rooms is pretty impressive. At first we were a bit wary about the windows and approached them with caution. But soon we felt completely safe, and leaned against them forgetting that all that was separating us from becoming a crimson veneer on the bricks below was a bit of glass.
This illusion was brutally shattered one sunny day in 2014, when it became crystal clear that the inhabitants of LUC had underestimated the danger they were living under. On the 5th of June, a piece of glass on the 13th floor fell onto the stairs in front of the building, resulting in a sea of glass shards. The event was publicized on LUC Central and AvB Housing, and in typical LUC fashion, the comments quickly devolved into a discussion about the broken glass; was it a window or a “glass panel”?
LUC administration responded by building a roof above the stairs to protect people from falling windows in future, and by potentially removing the image of the broken glass off facebook (how else do you explain its dissapearance on the original post [look below]). However, the more perspicacious LUCers will notice that the roof only covers the entrance, while the building is covered in windows. So you can see the glass as half full: More windows/glass panels might fall, but they are less likely to hit you!
So, what if someone told you “Those AvB windows may not be as safe as you think”? Would you move your bed away from your window? Would you stop leaning on it? Would you walk at a safe perimiter around AvB? Well that warning came nearly two years ago, when a cold shower of glass crashed against AvB’s entrance, and it’s good to take a moment to remember, reflect, and react. Stick to LUC News for more nostalgia and more #inmemoriam.
